Caregivers need your help

40% to 70% of family caregivers have clinically significant symptoms of depression. About a quarter to half of these caregivers meet the diagnostic criteria for major depression. [Zarit, S. (2006). Assessment of Family Caregivers: A Research Perspective.]

This workshop is for therapists, social workers, and other professionals who are working with caregivers. Gain a clear view of the care partner’s journey and their needs. Explore your own biases and obtain resources for their clients. Become a better guide for your clients in their relational healing and personal growth.

Course topics

Cultural Contexts: trends, definitions and themes in caregiving

Developmental Model: caregiving as a path of growth

Therapeutic Interventions: pragmatic suggestions and in-class practice

Resources & Specialized Referrals: community support, reading suggestions, and advice about typical referrals

Participants will leave with actionable steps and a deeper understanding of the caregiving journey. You'll have more confidence in your clinical work. As a clinician you will be able to recognize the developmental stage of caregiving and help point out to your client the many choices they have. With this understanding participants will be better equipped to remain calm and present for the individual.

Meet the presenters

Independently, we have dedicated our careers to working with elders and their caregivers. Once we met, our shared passion of counseling caregivers so they can remain healthy and present with their loved one became clear. We wholeheartedly agree that if we can reduce caregivers' suffering then we are reducing the suffering of our elders. Who better to equip with knowledge than the kindhearted professionals whom are holding space for these caregivers! Thank you for the work you do in the community!

Daniella & Erin met in Portland, Oregon in 2017 while working at Cascadia Behavioral Healthcare’s Older Adult team. They became fast friends as they supported each other’s professional growth as therapists. We were able to accompany individuals as they explored the meaning of life, felt the loss of physical and emotional well-being, and approached death. To be with people as they approached the end of their life was an honor.

We began dreaming about how we could decrease the difficulty of loss for our elders and their community. That leads us to this workshop that equips counseling professionals with knowledge and a developmental model of the caregiving path.
